Sports

The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports is the country’s largest voluntary organization, and more than 90 percent of children and young people participate in sports during their upbringing. The organization works to ensure that sports are a safe place to belong – a place where there is room to raise and talk about concerns related to harmful sexual behavior.
Reporting in Norwegian sports
Sports organizations have their own guidelines against sexual harassment and abuse, as well as a digital reporting system: If you wish to report matters that may constitute a breach of the guidelines against sexual harassment and abuse in Norwegian sports, you can report directly through this system.
Safe in training (Trygg på trening)
We recommend that volunteers in sports clubs who want to learn more about what to do if they suspect that a child may be exposed to violence or sexual abuse complete the e-learning course Safe in Training, developed in collaboration with Save the Children. A physical course version is also available for sports clubs. This provides increased competence and an opportunity to reflect together on how to ensure safer sports environments for children and young people.
Seek help and advice
If you are unsure whether you have witnessed or become aware of harmful sexual behavior in a sports context, you can always contact your regional sports organization or Safe and Ethical Sports within the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports for advice and guidance. Many people find this difficult and frightening to handle, especially if they have no prior experience with the topic. That is precisely why advisors are available to support you and help you move forward.
Example 1
Petter (14) and his team usually shower in the locker room after matches. Recently, the others have been joking about taking photos of Petter naked, and he finds it difficult to clearly say no. Today, it escalated to the point where some of them held him down and filmed his genitals before sending the video on Snapchat to the entire team.

Example 2
Nora (17) has been at a party with the rest of her team. At the party, they met several boys who play on the men’s team in the same sports club. She comes to you and says that she woke up the next morning in a bed with Anders (18), without remembering how she got there. Nora says she was not wearing underwear and that she does not know what may have happened.

Example 3
As a coach, you react to Marco (8) displaying sexually intrusive behavior, with more than occasional touching of both your body and that of others. He also uses language and certain sexualized expressions that make you react, as he appears to know more than what is age-appropriate.
